Most modern modems are properly configured in their "factory default" settings. To check your modem configuration :-
AT&V(check your modem manual for the correct command to display the configuration).
ATS0=0(again, check your modem manual for the correct command).
The reason you turn off "auto answer" is that the program
that monitors the serial port and starts the login process (the getty -
in this case uugetty) will actually tell the modem to pick up the line
and commence the connection when it sees the
RING string sent by
the modem when it detects an incoming call.
This tip assumes you have a reasonably modern modem, which can handle a range of modem connect speeds whilst running its serial interface to your computer at a fixed (and high) speed.
