kernel-image-2.0.29

*download (1.97 Mb)
Version: 3 Last modified: Wed Mar 19 22:57:38 1997
Architecture: i386
Maintainer:
Sven Rudolph <sr1@os.inf.tu-dresden.de>
Description:
Linux kernel binary image. This package contains the Linux kernel image, the System.map file, and the modules built by the packager. It also contains scripts that update the symbols in the /boot/psdatabase file for /bin/ps et al., and tries to ensure that the system is not left in a unbootable state after an update.

If you wish to update a bootdisk, or to use a bootloader to make installing and using the image easier, we suggest you install the latest fdutils (for formatting a floppy to be used as boot disk), and LILO, for a powerful bootloader. Of course, both these are optional.

Version: 2.0-9 Last modified: Wed Mar 5 23:16:19 1997
Architecture: alpha
Maintainer:
Wichert Akkerman <wakkerma@wi.leidenuniv.nl>
Description:
GNU grep, egrep and fgrep. The GNU family of grep utillities may be the "fastest grep in the west". GNU grep is based on a fast lazy-state deterministic matcher (about twice as fast as stock Unix egrep) hybridized with a Boyer-Moore-Gosper search for a fixed string that eliminates impossible text from being considered by the full regexp matcher without necessarily having to look at every character. The result is typically many times faster than Unix grep or egrep. (Regular expressions containing backreferencing will run more slowly, however.)

sysklogd

*download (43 Kb)
Version: 1.3-14 Last modified: Tue Mar 4 11:53:03 1997
Architecture: m68k
Maintainer:
Martin Schulze <joey@linux.de>
Description:
Description: Kernel and system logging daemons This package implements two system log daemons. The syslogd daemon is an enhanced version of the standard Berkeley utility program. This daemon is responsible for providing logging of messages received from programs and facilities on the local host as well as from remote hosts.

The klogd daemon listens to kernel message sources and is responsible for prioritizing and processing operating system messages. The klogd daemon can run as a client of syslogd or optionally as a standalone program. Klogd can now be used to decode EIP addresses if it can determine a System.map file.

Version: 2.7-13 Last modified: Wed Feb 26 08:20:24 1997
Architecture: alpha
Maintainer:
Dale Scheetz <dwarf@polaris.net>
Description:
File comparison utilities The diff package provides the diff, diff3, sdiff, and cmp programs.

`diff' shows differences between two files, or each corresponding file in two directories. `cmp' shows the offsets and line numbers where two files differ. `cmp' can also show all the characters that differ between the two files, side by side. `diff3' shows differences among three files. `sdiff' merges two files interactively.

The set of differences produced by `diff' can be used to distribute updates to text files (such as program source code) to other people. This method is especially useful when the differences are small compared to the complete files. Given `diff' output, the `patch' program can update, or "patch", a copy of the file.

This is how the next upstream release of procps may look (i.e. it will look like this if there is not too much resistance). Description:
Manipulate system configuration variables A system configuration variable might be whether the hardware clock is set to local time or UTC. Some Debian package installation scripts and system administration scripts use cfgtool to get their configuration information. This way the script does not have to be edited to configure it. The administrator (root) can use cfgtool to change the variables.

Christoph Lameter <clameter@debian.org>
Description:
Boot disk creator. SYSLINUX is a boot loader for the Linux operating system which operates off MS-DOS floppies. It is intended to simplify first-time installation of Linux. It is *not* intended to be used as a general purpose boot loader; once the operating system is installed I recommend LILO as the boot loader, except for people whose root filesystem is a UMSDOS filesystem (where a DOS defragmenter could wreck havoc with LILO's carefully set up block tables) -- for them I recommend Loadlin (which loads Linux from the DOS command line).

Description:
a pattern scanning and text processing language Mawk is an interpreter for the AWK Programming Language. The AWK language is useful for manipulation of data files, text retrieval and processing, and for prototyping and experimenting with algorithms. Mawk is a new awk meaning it implements the AWK language as defined in Aho, Kernighan and Weinberger, The AWK Programming Language, Addison-Wesley Publishing, 1988. (Hereafter referred to as the AWK book.) Mawk conforms to the Posix 1003.2 (draft 11.3) definition of the AWK language which contains a few features not described in the AWK book, and mawk provides a small number of extensions.

Mawk is smaller and much faster than gawk. It has some compile-time limits such as NF = 32767 and sprintf buffer = 1020.

Christoph Lameter <clameter@debian.org>
Description:
Utilities to add users and groups to the system. Adduser can be invoked either as "adduser" or "addgroup" by the system administrator or by a batch job to add users and groups to the system. This program can also be used to add an existing user to an existing group.

Adding users with "adduser" is usually better than adding them by hand, since the new user's UID and GID are automatically selected, a home directory is created, skeletal user configuration files are copied to the new directory, and an initial password and finger information are set. The whole process can be customized by running a user defined script on adding a user.
