Importing Log Data From Files

You can import log data from files in a variety of formats, including:

The procedure for importing data is similar in all of these cases; the primary difference is in the expected format of the data in the file.

To import logs from a file, do the following:

  1. In the navigation tree, right-click a well node, point to Import, and click the type of data to import. (You can also right-click the logs node of a well to import logs, or the measured_values node of a well to import other data.)

  2. An Open Log File dialog box appears.

  3. Click Browse. A Select a File dialog box appears. The default file type varies, depending on the type of data you are importing (.las for LAS files, .xml for WITSML, or .txt for other data formats).

  4. Browse for and select a file, and click Open.

  5. A list of the logs in the file appears in the Select Curves tab of the Open Log File dialog box. You can also review the data in the file on the File View tab.

  6. If you wish, modify the Well name. The default name is based on the file name. The imported logs will be grouped under this name in the Current Project tree.

  7. To avoid loading a particular log, clear its checkbox in the Load column.

  8. You can change the Desire Name of a log by clicking in its cell and editing the value. This is the name that the log will have in the project (unless it conflicts with an existing name).

  9. You can change the LAS Units or Desired Units by either editing the text of the value, or by selecting another value from the list. The LAS Units are read from the file, but you can change them if you know that the units specified in the file are incorrect. The default value for Desired Units is based on the current unit system.

  10. NOTE: A red background in the units columns indicates unrecognized or missing units. A yellow background indicates that the units are incompatible and cannot be converted.

  11. Click OK to begin importing the data.

After the import process completes, a node for the imported log suite appears in the navigation tree, under the appropriate category.
